At present, such revisions through retro-fitment are allowed only in vehicles that conform to BS-4 emission norms. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has said in a notification that the Ministry has recommended retrofitting of CNG and LPG kits on BS-6 petrol vehicles and replacement of diesel engines with CNG or LPG engines in case of BS6 vehicles below 3.5 tonnes. The instruction also prescribes the type approval requirement for retrofitting.

CNG is an environmentally friendly fuel
CNG is an environment-friendly fuel and claims to reduce emission levels of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, particulate matter and smoke compared to fossil fuels like petrol and diesel, the ministry said. Along with this, the ministry said that this advice has been prepared after consultation with the stakeholders.
